What is this lower left abdominal pain? Ovarian cysts, cancer, IBS?
For the past 5 months, I have been having abdominal pain every single day. The pain is to the left side and about 1.5" below my belly button. The pain is there every day and pretty much constant.
I am a 26 year old female. I had a pelvic ultrasound, pelvic exam and CT scan when this all started. The pelvic ultrasound showed several small follicular cysts on both ovaries, more on the left, everything else was clear. I followed up with my GYN who said the cysts would not be causing this pain and dismissed me, told me to come back in Jan. (which I will do)…I went to my Gastro dr. who put me on treatment for possible IBS (levbid) but it did not help and my bowel movements do not seem to be correlated with the pain. Gastro pushed on my stomach and said the pain is located right at ovary level. IT stays very sore and my low back is very sore as well. No other symptoms. I don’t really know where to go from here. Any suggestions? Are pelvic u/s always accurate? Thanks!
I do have the pain all the time – not related to cycles and yes the ultrasound was vaginal.
follicular cysts are present in many women.
the frist treatment is often a 28 day cycle birthcontrol.

Do you have the pain all the time or is it just when you are ovulating. It may just be nothing? Stick with your OB/GYN and do not give up until you know what it is and have it treated. Is there such a thing as IBS or does it stand for I have no clue.

The pain is from the cysts. I have a cyst on my right ovary right now and I get the same pain in my abdomen and my back. If the cysts get twisted or if they rupture it can cause intense pain. I would talk to another gyno. I can’t believe they actually told you that the cysts would not cause pain when that is completely untrue.

could be any one of those. Ask about endometriosis. I had that. See the link below.

You have my sympathy… I have been getting pains in my sides and around my lower area for over 2years and it gets excrutiating. Cists do cause pain, maybe he didn’t think they would cause so much pain because they were so small… but still, when you go back deffinately get him to book you in for another ultrasound to check on them cause being in constant pain is deffinately not fun and disrupts a lot of things.
After 2years of tests my Gynae who thinks I may have PMDD, but it doesn’t sound likely you have that.
Try and hang in till you see your Gynae, but tell him how much it is affecting you. Believe me, it makes you feel so c**p when it goes on for so long.
Good luck and all the best

Cysts do cause that kind of pain. I would talk to another gyno and get a second opinion.
I have IBS and when it starts to act up it feels like really bad gas pains.

Well I do ultrasound and they are very dependant upon the technician that is scanning you. Although, along with the ct scan I would say you have had an accurate work up. Have you been checked for endometriosis? That would cause you pelvic pain. And it could be gathered up more on your left side. This would not show up on ultrasound and as far as I know it won’t show up on a CT either. Sorry your not getting any answers for your pain. Did you have a vaginal ultrasound or did they just look on top of your abdomen? A vaginal shows the ovaries a lot more clear. So if you had that as well then you got a good ultrasound scan.
